Often referred to as “Digital Natives,” Generation Z is defined by never knowing an existence apart from the Internet and mobile technology. Their online world seamlessly transitions into their IRL (“In Real Life”) communities. They are never far from their smartphones or logged out of their social media networks for long.

But where are they hanging out online? And how are they spending so much time on their phones! Let’s take a look at some of the current technology and digital trends for Generation Z as we try to meet them in their digital space:

Devices

While Gen Zers are no strangers to laptops or tablets, the device on which they spend most of their online time is their cell phone. According to a 2018 Pew Research Center survey, 95% of 13- to 17-year-olds have access to a smartphone. That number has certainly only increased within the last few years. For Generation Z, when it comes to their preferred technological device, smartphones remain supreme.

Platforms

Where does Generation Z spend most of their time online? Social media platforms are their primary online destinations, especially Snapchat, Instagram, and TikTok. YouTube is another favorite online hangout of Gen Zers, a platform that is both a space for community and content creation. While they might have a Facebook account or Twitter handle, those networks are less likely to be utilized by Generation Z. Texting or messaging apps are more popular modes of communication than email or calls.

Content

What type of content is Generation Z viewing when they go online? They are fueled by visually driven online media, especially pictures and videos. If you want to get a message across to Generation Z, make sure it is available on their preferred social media platforms rather than on a web page or through an email campaign. As Emily Ketchen, director of marketing for HP puts it, “snackable” messaging is best—short, concise, to the point, and easy to devour.

Online Communities

Online, Generation Z is driven to like-minded communities, even if these communities are made up of “internet strangers.” They are drawn to others through shared social causes or through following certain hashtags. They may even find support online that they cannot find in real life; for example, many Gen Zers come out as gay or bi-sexual online before they come out to their own friends and family members. Generation Z really believes that the internet can bring others together, even from around the globe.

View of Technology

Overall, Generation Z views technology as an extension of themselves. They never had to learn new ways of digital communication or adapt to modern devices. As they come into the workforce and consumer market, they will expect the world to match their pace for technology advancement and digital preferences. Will we be able to keep up?
